Skills

  • Count to 30 Says the number words in order from 1 up to 30 without skipping ("1, 2, 3 … 20 … 30").
  • One word per object Points at each object once, and answers "how many?" with the last number said ("1, 2, 3, so 3").
  • See it at a glance Says how many are there without counting: dots, dice and fingers to 5, then 6–10 as "5 and some".
  • Same count, moved around Knows 8 objects are still 8 when spread out, packed or in a circle, up to 20.
  • Zero means none Says 0 when there is nothing, and knows 0 is a number ("the basket is empty, so 0").
  • More, fewer, same Tells which of two groups has more, fewer or the same, by pairing items or counting.
  • Give exactly n Counts out exactly the number asked and stops there ("give the dog 6 bones").
  • Numerals 0–20 Matches a numeral to its quantity and finds it among others ("the card 12 goes with 12 dots").
  • One more, one less Says the next number, one more, or one less than any number to 20 without counting from 1 ("one more than 9 is 10").
  • Count on and back Starts from any number and counts up, or counts down to 0 ("start at 7: 7, 8, 9…"; "5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0").
  • Order 0–10, find the gap Puts numeral cards 0–10 in order and names the card missing on a number track ("0, 1, 2, _, 4").
  • Which number is bigger? Compares two numerals to 10 without counting objects ("8 is bigger than 5").
  • Parts of a number Splits a number into two parts: 5 is 2 and 3 ("5 = 4 + 1 = 3 + 2").
  • 1st to 5th Uses first to fifth and last for positions in a line, and tells "third" (place) from "3" (amount).
  • Write numerals Writes numerals the right way round with the right strokes, and picks the correctly formed one.
  • Count by 10s, 2s, 5s Chants by tens to 100, and starts 2s and 5s along a track, just for fun with no pass mark.
