Home Mathematics Grade 2 Mathematics · Grade 2 Skills Count within 1000 across hundreds Counts on and back across a hundred boundary (398, 399, 400, 401) and from any 3-digit start. Read and write 3-digit numbers: digits, words, expanded Writes 352 as three hundred fifty-two and as 300 + 50 + 2, and reads either back to digits. Compare and order 3-digit numbers Puts 407, 470, 74 in order and writes 407 < 470 using <, > and = by looking at the hundreds first. Odd and even numbers Decides 17 is odd and 18 is even by pairing or the last digit, and writes an even number as a double (18 = 9 + 9). Place a number on a 0–500–1000 line Puts 640 about right on a line marked 0, 500 and 1000 and reads a number off a marked point. Skip-count in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s from any start Counts forwards and backwards from 36 in 2s, or from 7 in 5s, and in 3s from any start. Skip-count in 4s and 8s Counts in 4s from 36 (36, 40, 44…) and in 8s (8, 16, 24…), forwards and back (introduce-only). Meet numbers to 10,000 Reads a 4-digit number built from blocks (2 thousands, 4 hundreds → 2400) and knows ten hundreds make a thousand. Roman numerals I–XII on clock faces (local, non-gating) Reads a Roman clock face and says that IX is 9 and VII is 7. Ten tens make a hundred; build 3-digit numbers Trades 10 tens for 1 hundred and builds 245 from blocks. Value of each digit in 3-digit numbers Says the 7 in 372 is worth 70 and the 3 is worth 300. Zero holds an empty place Tells 305 from 35 and 350, and writes "3 hundreds, 0 tens, 5 ones". Partition a 2-digit number in more than one way Splits a 2-digit number as tens and ones in a non-standard way. Example: 43 is 3 tens and 13 ones. Show a number in different tens-and-ones ways Shows 352 as 34 tens + 12 ones and as 2 hundreds + 15 tens + 2 ones, using blocks. Add or subtract 10 in your head Knows 472 + 10 = 482 and 305 − 10 = 295, spotting that only the tens digit changes (except across a hundred). Add or subtract 100 in your head Knows 472 + 100 = 572 and 905 − 100 = 805, only the hundreds digit changes. Equal groups and arrays as repeated addition and × Writes 4 groups of 3 as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 and as 4 × 3, and reads a 4-by-3 array as 4 × 3. 2, 5 and 10 times tables with division facts Recalls 6 × 5 = 30 and 30 ÷ 5 = 6, 7 × 2 and 70 ÷ 10 instantly. 3 and 4 times tables Recalls 3 × 7 = 21, 4 × 6 = 24 and their division facts. Meet the 6, 7, 8 and 9 tables Explores 6 × 7 with arrays and the pattern of the 9s (9 × 4 = 36: digits add to 9). Not a gate. ×0, ×1 and swapping factors Knows 7 × 0 = 0, 7 × 1 = 7 and that 3 × 5 = 5 × 3 but 12 ÷ 3 ≠ 3 ÷ 12. Subset of G3.MD.4: ×0, ×1 and commutativity only; associative and distributive strategies are not covered (introduce-only). Multiply by tens and 2-digit × 1-digit Works 4 × 30 from 4 × 3, then 23 × 4 with a grid (20 × 4 + 3 × 4). Sharing, grouping and thinking multiplication Tells "12 shared among 3" from "12 in groups of 3", writes ÷, solves 32 ÷ 8 by asking 8 × ? = 32. Remainders and 2-digit ÷ 1-digit Says what is left over in 14 ÷ 4 = 3 remainder 2 and shares 72 into 3 equal groups with blocks. Bridge through 10 when adding 1-digit numbers Adds 8 to 47 by 47 + 3 = 50, + 5 = 55. Subtract a 1-digit number crossing a ten Works 52 − 6 as 52 − 2 = 50, − 4 = 46. Add and subtract tens mentally Does 46 + 30 = 76 and 90 − 40 = 50 in their head. Derived facts: scale a known fact Uses 3 + 7 = 10 to know 30 + 70 = 100, and 8 − 5 = 3 to know 80 − 50 = 30. Mental ± of hundreds, tens and ones in 3-digit numbers Does 472 + 300 = 772, 472 + 20 = 492, 472 + 5 = 477 without writing. Doubles to 50 Doubles 17 to 34 and 25 to 50 by doubling tens and ones.
