Skills
- Detects when a speaker is stating an opinion as though it were a fact.
- Holds a short structured discussion: makes a point, hears the reply, concedes or answers it.
- Introduces two people to each other, and introduces themselves to an adult with a handshake or local equivalent.
- Delivers a 5-minute prepared presentation with a clear opening, middle and close.
- Recites from memory a substantial poem or passage (20+ lines) with expression.
- Reads an unfamiliar text aloud at first sight without stumbling.
- Compares how two texts treat the same subject and says where they disagree.
- Identifies an author's purpose: to inform, to persuade, to entertain, to sell.
- Reads and follows written instructions of ten or more steps (a recipe, a model kit, a game's rules) without an adult.
- Reads a non-fiction page and turns it into their own notes.
- Reads for 30+ minutes by choice, regularly, including books nobody assigned.
- Has read across at least four kinds of text: novel, non-fiction, poetry, myth/legend, comic, biography.
- Touch-types a short text at a usable speed (roughly 20+ words per minute).
- Writes a page of legible, well-laid-out prose: margins, paragraphs, a title.
- Proofreads their own writing and finds most of their own spelling errors.
- Uses a thesaurus to find a better word rather than a longer one.
- Uses paragraphs correctly: one idea each, and a new one when the idea changes.
- Recognises and repairs a run-on sentence and a fragment.
- Uses pronouns unambiguously, so the reader always knows who "he", "she" or "it" is.
- Writes a 1–2 page story with a real plot, a problem and a resolution.
- Writes a formal letter or email (complaint, request, thank-you) with the right register.
- Writes a poem using a deliberate form or device: rhyme, rhythm, metaphor, repetition.
- Writes a summary of something they read, correctly attributed, without copying it.
- Discusses a book with others: what they liked, what failed, and why.
- Recognises when a text is trying to make them feel something, and how it does it.
