Switching between English and French
The whole site works in English and in French. See where the language button is, what changes when you press it, and why your child's progress does not.
Two languages, one site
learnCoreSkills is available in English and in French. This is more than a translated menu: the names and descriptions of topics, skills and activities, the messages your child sees during a game and the help pages you are reading now all exist in both languages. It is handy for families who speak both, for children in a French-immersion class, or for a child who is practising in the language they study in at school.
How to switch
Look at the top bar of any page. Next to the "Who's learning?" button there is a small flag with the name of the language currently in use. Press it. You are taken to the home page, where a card called "Switch language" appears with the two choices, English and French. Pick one, and the site changes straight away.
The language is also part of the page address, which begins with /en for English or /fr for French. If you share a link with a friend or a teacher, they see the page in the same language as you do. Changing the language in the address bar works too.
What changes
- The menu, buttons, headings and messages.
- The names and descriptions of topics, skills and activities.
- The feedback messages during a game, such as "Correct!" or the sentence that shows the right answer after a mistake.
- The mental-maths sheet, the Parent Area, these help pages and the legal pages.
The rest stays the same. The mathematics are the same, the levels are the same, and the scoring is the same.
What does not change
Your child's profile and progress are not tied to a language. If you play a skill in English on Monday and in French on Tuesday, the result is counted under the same child and the same skill. This also means you can use one language for yourself in the Parent Area and the other for your child during games, simply by switching before you hand over the device.
Remembering your choice
Your language choice is remembered in your browser, so that the next time you open the site by its plain address, it opens in the language you used last. As with the profiles, that memory is stored on your device only. If you clear your browser data, the site returns to its default language and you can choose again in a couple of seconds.
