Learn Core Skills — free mastery-based practice for children

By the learnCoreSkills team

Free, mastery-based practice activities across mathematics and the whole-child skills framework, tracked per child with no lesson videos to sit through.

What your child can practise

Mathematics and life-skills activities from pre-kindergarten to grade 5, with mastery tracked for every child. No lesson videos to sit through: children practise, get instant feedback and move on at their own pace.

Subjects

How it works

A child picks a skill and answers short questions. Every answer is marked straight away, with an explanation when it is wrong. When a skill is solid the next one unlocks; otherwise the child gets more examples. Parents see, skill by skill, what is secure and what needs another look, with no account to create.

Why mastery

Many children can recite a procedure without understanding it. Here a skill is practised until it is reliable, using varied activities, concrete pictures and everyday tasks such as counting money, measuring and telling the time.

For parents

Pick a grade, add your children and follow their progress from the parent area. Data stays on your device and can be exported or imported.

What a practice session looks like

A session is short, usually five to ten minutes. The child sees one question at a time, often with pictures they can count, move or compare, and taps or types an answer. A correct answer is celebrated and the next question is slightly different, so the child cannot simply repeat a pattern. A wrong answer gets a kind explanation and a chance to try a similar question straight away. At the end the child sees what went well and what to practise next, and the parent area records it.

Privacy and advertising

Children's practice data never leaves the family's device, and we do not ask for names, emails or passwords from children. Advertising, when it appears at all, is limited to pages written for adults, such as articles, and is never placed on children's activity screens. You can read the details on the Privacy page, and ask us anything through the Contact page.

Who it is for

Children from pre-kindergarten to grade 5 practise on their own or beside a parent. Parents and teachers use the parent area to add children, choose a grade and see which skills are secure. The site is available in English and French, and works on phones, tablets and computers without installing anything.

Common questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Practice activities, progress tracking and the parent area are free. Pages meant for adults may show advertising that helps pay for the site; children's activity screens never do.

Do we need an account?

No. Each child's progress is saved on your own device, and you can export it or import it on another device whenever you like.

What does mastery mean?

A skill counts as secure only after a child answers correctly and consistently across different questions, not after one lucky try. Until then the skill keeps coming back with fresh examples.

What can my child practise today?

Mathematics is the first subject, from counting and number bonds to fractions, money, measuring and telling the time. More life-skills areas, such as health, money and learning how to learn, are listed in the syllabus as they are built.

Who writes the activities and articles?

The learnCoreSkills team writes them, checks them against the grade they are labelled for, and fixes mistakes that readers report through the Contact page.
